Rit Summer Internship: Remote Sensing

Today I went to a 2 master's defenses. They were very interesting yet long. When I got back the RIT repair guys were moving the electrical strip. Nina finished my data for the 19 for my presentation. I then worked on my presentation.

Today I worked on getting roi's of Landsat night scenes, and of the GT and buoy points of interest. I also learned how to change permissions on UNIX machines. Today I recommended to Bob Callens that we go on a field trip to Geospatial Systems Incorporated here on John St.

Today when I came in we determined that it was to hazy to go outside so I worked on getting buoy data for the day before. I then went over my presentation with Nina and worked on getting her data for my cardeck.

Today when I came in Smita and I debated on going out on a collect today. We determined that it was to hazy to go out on a collect so I worked on the presentation. I read some of Julia's thesis on Landsat calibration. I created a full outline for my presentaion also.

Today Smita, michelle, and I went to the bay to practice taking measurement by ourselves so that when Nina leaves we can do it. We ate lunch up there, then came bak around 2:00. When I got back I put in more time on the powerpoint presentation.

Today I continued to work on my presentation. I had to leave early to go to my Senior pictures so I did not get much done. When I came back it was time for volleyball. When we began playing volleyball the RIT formula car was being raced in the parking lot and I went and watched. I found out that anyone can join the team no matter what major. I would like to join the team when I come to RIT.

Today I worked on getting a rough draft of my presentation done before Nina leaves for vacation. I went and get lots of info on Landsat history, and specs. I went on the Unix machines and started working on the days that I would present. I learning more about Landsat now than I did when I was learning How to get the info because I was only seeing part of the big picture before.

Today When I came in I worked on the Unix machines with ENVI. I created roi files for all the buoy data and ground truth data. It was tedious but it needed done. I also worked with Smita in ENVI. After that I read some info on Remote Sensing and Landsat. As I learn about Remote Sensing I'm realizing that it is vital the nation in more than just military applications. Learning all of the Remote Sensing info is making me exited for being a future Imaging Scientist.

Today I worked on transferring all the files over to the Unix machines. I also created more structures for the data. Nina and I did some trouble shooting with ENVI because the vectors would not be displayed two at a time. I finding that ENVI is a very powerful program but it allows for so much customization that it takes for ever to learn.

Today we went to Cooper Vision and saw the production facilities. They make costom contact lenses. It was Interesting to see the production from start to finish. After that we went to Tom Whal's and ate lunch. When we got back I went to the lunch seminars. When I got back to work I worked with ArcVeiw and some buoy data. After that we Veiwed the buoys in ENVI.

Today I worked with ArcView converting buoy files to shapefiles because they need to be in that form to overlay into ENVI. I also veiwed all the new landsat images with the buoy vectors to take notes on them.

Today the weather site was up so created all the weather files. After they were created I prepared them for modtran. After that I structured some files on the Unix systems which runs modtran.

Today I began working on my presentation for our final project. Then I did some research on remote sensing and Landsat. I then went and made some tables to know what type of data we have. I updated the Wiki site. I looked at every Landsat image of 2005 and wrote a description of it.

Today I organized all the data we collected into different folders. It also converted buoy files to shape files. I went in the afternoon to the Holography lab and was trained to make holograms Saturday. I then went and worked on more files.

Today I worked in the lab processing the rest of yesterdays GPS points. I then had to go and get radiosonde data for every day that Landsat flew over. Once I had I then separated by every 12 hours. Then I went to the weekly lunch presentations. When I got back I started to organize all the files by dates. After that Nina came in to show me the buoy data and how she wanted the data structured.

Today I went to the weekly DIRS meeting were Don McKoewn, the distinguished researcher for LIAS, a subset of DIRS, gave a powerpoint on what they are doing for the year and all the sensors that they operate.
After the meeting Nina, Smita, and I went up to the bay to collect data. We met Emmitt there and we went out on his boat. We used a Radiometer and Thermistor. When we got backed I then processed the data. When we were done processing we had an intense two hours of volleyball.

Today we started off with a demonstration of an infarred camera. We saw the benefits and attributes of using an infarred camera.
After the meeting I went and worked in the lab with ENVI and ArcSoft. I did not learn anything new but I can confidently do the functions that they ask me to do.

Today I went on our field trip to Melles Griot. The Rochester division specializes in optics. We toured the whole production facility including the machine shop, glass shop, and the clean rooms. The optics they make are very high end. The cheapest lenses they sell are $1000, and the most expensive lenses are up to $150,000. The field trip was nice to go on because I now know more firmly that I want to stay in remote sensing. After the field trip we went to Pizza Hut for the all you can eat buffet.
When I got back I started my training with ENVI again by doing online tutorials. I learned how to overlay a vector image and select regions of interest and get the spectral data from those regions. Then Monday we are going out on the bay to do a collect, and we also may go Tuesday.

Today I began with an interesting science experiment in Phsycophsics and Vision. First we went into a dark room and let our eyes adapt. Then we covered one eye and kept it covered as we walked around the building. Then we went back in the dark room and it was like you were blind in one eye.
Then after the morning meeting I went and worked with Nina on learning ENVI. ENVI is a software program that is used by Imaging Scientists to get more information out of an image. It will be very useful learning ENVI because I am sure I will have to learn it in college. The one problem with me when I am learning ENVI is that I find I don't learn anything when I read the manuals, but when I watch someone use it I always remember what they did and how they did it.
I am also looking foreword to working with the WASP team this August, it will be much better than being stuck in a lab with a boring Grad student.

This morning I started my work with Nina on the Landsat project. We are collecting data to calibrate Lansat 5 and Landsat 7 with. I spent most of my time learning how to use archived and MapSource Software and tomorrow I will begin learning how to use ENVI. At the beginning of August I will hopefully be done with Landsat and will be able to work on WASP.

Today we had a meeting in the auditorium with the DIRS group and then we had a meeting brainstorming the best way for us to get spectral measurements of cars. Lastly we played volleyball because it is Tuesday.

Today Lon was in and gave us an overview of our summer program. We also went to some of the Labs and were taught how to use some of the equipment. After lunch we went out to Spencerport to create fires for a WASP fly-over.

Today we helped Sarah and Jessie paint two targets in the parking lot. The targets are used to calibrate sensors that will be flying over Sunday.
